Sivagir poligars belong to the “Palli or Vanniyan caste”.
Please refer to “History of the military transactions of the British nation in Hindustan” written by Orme(1861).
Also refer to the Tirunelveli district Gazetter (Page 416-419) published in 1916 by H.R.Pate.
There is a literary work “Sivagiri Kadhal” written by a poet named Pugazhendhi in which the Sivagiri chieftain is mentioned as “vanniya kula rasa Varagunarama pandiyan”.
Also a descendant of poligar of Sivagiri even participated in a Vanniyar(Palli) caste conference.
The zamindar of Sivagiri Sri.Sangili Veeera Pandiya Chinnathambiar(1854-1896) is defintely a Vanniyar by caste.
